🥚 What You Need to Know About Egg Donation in Canada (2025 Update)

At Little Miracles, we believe that helping someone grow their family is one of the most selfless gifts a person can offer. If you’re considering becoming an egg donor—or you’re just curious—this guide will help you understand everything you need to know before taking the next step.

💡 Why Do People Choose Egg Donation?

Egg donation gives hope to individuals and couples who can’t have children on their own—whether due to infertility, genetic concerns, same-sex relationships, or being single by choice. Donors help create families. Full stop.

👩‍⚕️ Who Can Become an Egg Donor in Canada?

To become an egg donor in Canada, you must generally meet the following criteria:

  • Be between 21 and 32 years old

  • Be in good physical and emotional health

  • Have a clear family medical history

  • Be a non-smoker

  • Be willing to undergo medical and psychological screening

  • Have a flexible schedule for appointments and travel

🧬 Note: If you’re adopted and don’t have access to your biological family’s medical history, you may not qualify.

🧭 What Is the Egg Donation Process Like?

At Little Miracles, we walk every donor through the process with empathy, respect, and clear communication. Here’s what to expect:

1. Application & Phone Consultation

You’ll fill out a secure, detailed application and submit photos. After review, we’ll book a friendly phone chat to go over everything.

2. Profile Review & Clinic Approval

Once you’re approved by our intake team, we send your profile to fertility clinics for pre-clearance.

3. Medical & Psychological Screening

Bloodwork, a physical exam, and a psychological assessment are standard. We’ll guide you through each step.

4. Matching With Intended Parents

When a recipient chooses your profile, you’ll be notified. This is often the most exciting part—knowing someone is dreaming of a family because of you.

5. Legal & Logistics

You’ll have a legal consult (covered by the recipient) and walk through medication protocols and appointments.

6. The Retrieval

After a short cycle of hormone injections (usually 10–14 days), you’ll undergo a brief outpatient procedure to retrieve the eggs under light sedation.

💵 Is Egg Donation Compensated in Canada?

In Canada, egg donors are not “paid”—but they are reimbursed for all legitimate out-of-pocket expenses, such as:

  • Time off work

  • Childcare

  • Travel and accommodations

  • Meals

  • Medications not covered

All reimbursements are handled in accordance with Health Canada guidelines, and your expenses are covered fully by the intended parents.

🧠 Frequently Asked Questions

🟣 Will this affect my future fertility?
No. Your body releases one egg naturally per cycle. Fertility meds simply encourage the ovaries to mature more than one egg.

🟣 Can I donate more than once?
Yes! Many donors return to donate again. Clinics and agencies will guide you through eligibility for repeat cycles.

🟣 Will I meet the parents or child?
It depends on the type of donation: anonymous, known, or semi-known. You choose your comfort level.

🟣 How long does the whole process take?
From application to egg retrieval, timelines vary but average between 2–4 months, depending on match time and clinic scheduling.
